One hundred yards south of Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge and one hundred yards offshore in Stuart lies the wreck of Georges Valentine, Florida’s eleventh Underwater Archaeological Preserve. The iron-hulled screw steamer was originally built in 1869 and over the years was sold to a number of international companies until it found its way to Florida in the early 1900s.
